Día de los muertos
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, occurs every November 1 and 2nd to celebrate the life, joy, and memories of loved ones who have passed on. Contrary to some assumptions, Día de los Muertos is not a scary nor sad celebration. Families decorate their loved ones graves with photographs, flowers, candles, and tokens of items their loved ones held dear. This is a time to show respect, pay tribute to, and remember with gladness the lives of their lost ones.
To the right are images of examples of ofrendas, or altars, dedicated to a loved one. Las ofrendas are adorned with marigolds, flowers, candles, photographs, religious symbols, and food.
People spend months in advance preparing for Día de los Muertos. They honor and show respect to their loved ones by cleaning, sweeping, and decorating their loved ones' grave with flowers and gifts. |
